I would confidently say that it is the highlight of the year for many in the sewing world. Sewists from around the world are gracing the streets and our timelines with colour, print, and pride to show us their cute handmade clothes and I love that for us. It really is the best time of the year. The sun is shining, (finally in the Netherlands) and I get so much inspiration from everyone seeing them share their creations with joy, trying new things, and styling their makes in fun new ways.
This will be my second year participating. Last year, I was just so eager to be a part of it all and to soak up all the positiveness and inspiration from my favourite sewists. My pledge last year was to wear me-made whenever possible and I was super proud by the end of the month to have been able to wear at least 1 me-made item for the entire month. I was bursting with pride.
So for this year, my goal stays the same but I want to find new ways to style my me-made clothes. Sometimes I find myself making something fun, but when it comes to styling it and wearing it out, I get confused. For me this year, I wanna experiment a little more and find new ways to combine things in my me-made wardrobe. I think this is also a good time of year to make an audit of my me-made wardrobe. What are my favourite pieces? what are my favourite patterns? Is it time to make another? Which pieces don’t get as much love? Do I wanna keep these?
That is what I hope to get out of this month.
Countdown
It is also an extra bit of fun for me as it’s also a countdown to my birthday. Last year, I turned 25 and took an extra challenge upon myself to make 5 new things to celebrate turning 25 to be worn the 5 days after my birthday. It was fun, I succeeded but I was so exhausted afterwards. This year, I want to be a little more realistic. I don’t have time to make 5 new things, and I barely have time to make the 2 special dresses I’m working on at the moment. More on those later 😉…
What I would love to do this year is to make a dress that I can wear to church after my birthday and a dress to wear on my actual birthday. For me, it is a really fun way of carrying out a tradition. When I was younger, I would get a new dress from my parents for my birthday every year. it was always something lovely to look forward to and now that I mostly make my clothes and rarely buy anything new, making a new dress feels like the best way to carry that on.
So next to MMM, I am working on a project for my birthday. What will it be? I have no idea, but I do have the fabric set aside for it already so bring it on.
