This was my first sewing project. A monumentally terrible decision is what it was but it is one of the proudest moments of my sewing journey so far. After a few arguments with my sewing machine and an almost entirely handsewn zipper, I finished my first sewing project! With hindsight, this was not a good idea for a beginner. The sizing was off and the fit wasn’t the best and I had to do a lot of alterations to get it to fit the way it does. In fact upon closer inspection one of the sleeves is inserted backwards that being said, this is hella cute. I followed the Prima October 2019 Floral Maxi Dress Pattern. I chose a really lovely floral patterned polycotton fabric that I got from my local marketplace. I do have to be honest, I initially got some intense nightgown vibes during the making of this dress but with some makeup, a pair of heels and a ray of sunshine this is a really lovely spring/summer dress.

When i originally wrote this, I was and frankly still am really proud of how it turned out and I was so excited for an opportunity to wear it outside. Alas in the pandemic times there was no place to go an therefore nowhere to wear a maxi dress with a thigh high slit. So it hung in my closet and I learned and developed my skills while my Maria dress (which is what I called it because it reminded me of an allbeit sexy version of Jullie Andrews’ Maria from the Sound of Music twirling in the hills) taunting me with all the glaring sewing errors and mistakes

Where is this dress now?
It is January 2023 and my Maria dress is disassembled and waiting in a box for the courage to reassemble it. I kept looking at it and with every new project I took on all I could see were the problems, the terrible sewing, the mistakes, the hanging threads and the wonky zipper. Out of frustration, I took it apart because I knew I could do better and I can. One of these days I will put it back together.
